Label TextFrom 1892 to 1904, Sloan worked as a newspaper illustrator in Philadelphia. Never able to work quickly, he preferred assignments that allowed him to compose narrative scenes at his desk to on-the-spot reporting. The influence of Japanese prints upon his work is apparent in the elegant use of line, compressed space, and decorative patterning—elements which reveal Sloan's early facility to reduce a scene to its essentials through simplified line and bold drawing.
