Label TextWith its elegant, twisting tree and scroll-like composition, this unfinished study for an illustration demonstrates Sloan's interest in Japanese prints. It also provides a window into his working methods, showing how Sloan delineated his figures in pencil before inking over the lines to create outlines and filling in zones with patterns. It must have been an exacting and slow process.
