Label TextAda Forman was an American dancer who became known for her "Javanese" dancing in the early 20th century, when Americans were fascinated by performances loosely inspired by distant locales. Such dances emphasized glamour and exoticism rather than authenticity. Forman first performed Javanese-inspired dances for Denishawn (the company of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn) in 1915. When this was painted, she was appearing in the Greenwich Village Follies.
