Label TextWedgwood was a contemporary of Frank Short with whom he studied at the Royal College of Art in London. His precise, linear style was ideally suited to the architectural subjects for which he is best known. Many of his prints, including this one, feature Italian buildings from an earlier era. The Pincian Gardens, although dating back to ancient times, were redesigned in the early 19th century under the order of Napoleon. Wedgewood includes figures to give a sense of scale, as well as to add humanity to the formality of the classical design of the building and grounds. (msf)
