Label TextWiles was one of the most successful portrait painters in America at the turn-of-the-century. He had a studio in New York and was a favorite among the socially prominent, but also appealed to the rising upper middle class of business men and political figures. Samuel Bancroft commissioned this portrait of his wife from Wiles. Archival documentation suggests the artist traveled to Wilmington in order to make preliminary drawings for the portrait.
