Label TextThis painting marks the moment in 1789 when Washington stood on the balcony of the newly finished Federal Hall in New York to take the oath of office in front of the gathered members of Congress and an attentive citizenry.

When Harper and Bros. set out to publish Woodrow Wilson's A History of the American People, they reused Howard Pyle's illustrations from various Harper's Monthly Magazine articles published between 1881 and 1901. Only this image of Washington's inauguration was created specifically by Pyle for Wilson's limited-edition book.
