Label TextGerman-born Jewish artist Julius Bloch's sensitive depictions of working class subjects attracted the attention of Eleanor Roosevelt, who acquired a painting the artist made for the Public Works of Art Project to display in White House executive offices. Prints by Bloch responded to a variety of contemporary causes, from the crisis of lynching in the South to the living and working conditions of Pennsylvania coal mines.
