Label TextIn 1894, Sloan attended a lecture by Japanese newspaper artist Beisen Kubota, where he demonstrated his quick-sketch technique. For some weeks afterward Sloan experimented with this method, making brush-and-ink sketches around Philadelphia. This drawing may reflect his experiences making pictures in public. Later in his career, Sloan rarely painted outdoors in urban areas, preferring to recreate city scenes from memory.
