Label TextIn an early manifestation of his organizational abilities, Sloan helped form the Charcoal Club in Philadelphia as an alternative to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This group of aspiring artists gathered to sketch the nude model and offer critiques. Sloan's humorous drawing depicts his colleagues bemoaning the demise or waning of the short-lived club. The horse drawn cart and punning title allude to John Constable's famous landscape The Haywain (1821, National Gallery, London).
