Label TextAccording to the inscription, this watercolor depiction of a nude model dates from the months when Sloan, along with his friends William Glackens, Robert Henri, and Joe Laub, organized a cooperative drawing club in Philadelphia. Called the Charcoal Club, the group consisted of newspaper artists and art students who gathered to draw from models, socialize, and discuss art issues. Henri, who had recently returned from Paris and was teaching at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, gave the members feedback on their compositions.
