Label TextSloan's watercolor illustrating the second of twelve lessons in how to play the piano was accompanied by instructions and a note from the author: "Proficiency requires a little practice but no previous knowledge of music." After his early years as a newspaper illustrator, Sloan moved to New York City, where he established his career as a painter.
