Label TextThornton Oakley depicted the Hog Island Shipyard, located on Hog Island in the Delaware River, in a series of 15 lithographs commissioned by the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, a government body established in 1917 to acquire and operate merchant ships for wartime defense and commerce. The images, showcasing the "greatest shipyard in the world," were designed to engender pride for in America's fleet.
