Label TextNicholson lived his entire life on the Isle of Man where he was born. Although his early training with his father was in decorative painting, his mature work focused on the landscape. His close observation and intimate understanding of the Manx topography allowed him to capture, with a minimum of line and seemingly facile shading, views that were immediately recognizable. In this image, stark contrasts and restrained use of line viscerally convey the shaggy dampness of the two draft horses in the foreground and the openness of the island sky. (msf)
