Label TextThis cartoon depicts the British poet Sir Edwin Arnold, author of the narrative poem The Light of Asia, an interpretation of Buddhist religious texts. Arnold antagonized Prime Minister William Gladstone (the G.O.M., or grand old man sketched at the upper right) with his opposing political views. Arnold's second narrative poem The Light of the World was published in 1891 but did not achieve the success of his first.
