Label TextFrank B. Hoffmamn began his career as a sketch artist for the Chicago American newspaper, where he later become head of the art department. In 1916, Hoffman traveled West and lived with various Indian communities, recording their lives and customs. He then joined the artists' colony in Taos, New Mexico, studying color theory. While he pursued a fine-art career, Hoffman illustrated Western themed-stories in national magazines; this drawing is probably such an illustration. He also worked in corporate advertising art. From 1940 forward, Hoffman created Western images for the major calendar company Brown and Bigelow.
