Label TextFrederick Opper's clawed, fanged, and oversize tiger symbolized the corrupt Tammany Hall, the Democratic political machine that controlled New York City politics beginning in the mid-1850s and weakening only well into the 20th century. The "Tammany Tiger" was originally created by cartoonist Thomas Nast and was featured in Nast's series in Harper's Weekly from 1869 to 1871.
