Label TextWalter Appleton Clark illustrated this short story about a woman who plays the piano as she speaks with her writer husband about the women in his novels. The conversation leads them to think of their own romantic relationship.

A native of Massachusetts, Clark studied engineering and worked on a sailing vessel before enrollling at New York's Art Students League. His work attracted the attention of Scribner's art editor; as a result, he began his illustration career at that publishing house. He studied and worked for two years in France, illustrating for major American magazines while there. Clark's career was cut short by typhoid fever when he was thirty years old.
