Label TextStanley Arthurs depicts John Adams (at right) of Massachusetts during three days of debate on July 2nd to 4th, 1776. He is addressing another member of the Continental Congress on the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Although Adams' words were not recorded, Daniel Webster composed a speech echoing its sentiments, headed by the words of the caption, and delivered it on July 4, 1826, at Faneuil Hall in Boston.
