Label TextIn her 1934 book, Off with Their Heads! Bacon describes the painter and printmaker Childe Hassam, shown here nailing down etchings to dry, as follows:Small, low cranium diminished behind, fastened tight to round knoll of shoulders. Brief nips of cream-white hair flattened over balditude. Cocky little eyebrows near the top of the head. Fat eyelids and crude nose with large round tunnels for nostrils. Mouth sucked in as if sipping through a straw. Violent double chin, lending height to a very short face. Big ears, clapped on at the sides like decorative medallions. Little hirstute, dexterous hands, a trifle fussy. Speech deliberate, insistent, assertive. Steps mincingly in British brogues with an air of the greatest complacency.
