Label TextIn 1916, many readers of the Ladies Home Journal would not have traveled abroad. Editors favored stories set in still-exotic locales (here, Puerto Rico and China) that allowed American characters to act out dangerous and romantic plots. Stereotypes of race and gender abounded, as Americans - oblivious to their own prejudices - set everything right.
