Label TextPainted in his free time, Loper Sr.’s moody characterization of Wilmington’s illuminated skyline as seen from his kitchen window contrasts significantly with the clinical eye and precise draftsmanship required for the artist’s work on the Federal Art Program’s Index of American Design. After a Shower received an honorable mention in the Wilmington Society for Fine Art’s Annual Exhibition in 1937, a prize Loper Sr. was the first African American artist to receive. After a Shower later became the first work by an African American artist to join the collection of the newly built Delaware Art Museum.
