Label TextAfter the positive reception of Sloan's illustrations for Ralph Bergengren's pirate stories, the editors at Collier's asked Sloan to devise a full-page pirate-themed cartoon for one of their December issues. Sloan imagined two pirates who decide to try out the latest technology—the airplane, still a recent invention in 1910. Sloan had been to his first air show at Belmont Park in October of that year.
