Label TextThese life studies, done while Sloan was in his early twenties, demonstrate his ability to observe and render the human figure with subtle contrasts of light and dark. Such techniques were fundamental elements in the art instruction of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, which Sloan attended in the evenings from 1892 to 1894.
