Label TextFrederick Richards Leyland (1831-1892) exemplified the self-made man of the Victorian Industrial age. Beginning his career as an errand boy for the Liverpool shipping company, Bibby & Sons, he quickly moved up to manager while still in his thirties and went on to found his his own company by 1873. He was a significant patron of James McNeill Whistler and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, among others. He owned both Lady Lilith and Veronica Veronese, both of which are included in the Delaware Art Museum's Bancroft Collection.
