Label TextArchibald "Archie" Gunn was a native of England, where his father - with whom he studied - was a well-known painter. After designing costumes for Gilbert and Sullivan productions and painting portraits, Gunn came to the United States, where he was a popular illustrator for newspapers, magazines, and calendars."Zaza" opened at the Garrick Theatre, January 9, 1899. David Belasco's Broadway production was adapted from a French play about a prostitute who finds fame as an entertainer. Gunn captures the enthusiasm of the star, Mrs. Leslie Carter, who was famous for her red hair and lively acting style.
