Label TextThis is Howard Pyle's study for a mural that is still on view in the Essex County Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey. The scene portrays the arrival of Philip Carteret in Newark Bay in 1665 after his family was awarded the colony of New Jersey for their loyalty to the British Crown. Settlers and Native Americans observe the new governor as his secretary reads out his credentials. A group of immigrants who sailed with Carteret are coming ashore.

As growing numbers of magazine publishers increased the number of their illustrations, but often, in Pyle's eyes, reduced their quality, he turned to public mural painting. His trip to Italy in 1911, where he died, reflected his resolve to further his new career by studying Italian Renaissance murals.
