In this folkloric story of the The Flying Dutchman, a name which refers to both a captain and his ship, the captain sailed into a storm, cursing God and swearing to overcome the sea. The ship foundered, killing all on board. As punishment, the captain was doomed to sail forever. Pyle depicts the moment of the fatal storm, with the broken ship, its tormented crew and the defiant captain. "Sightings" of The Flying Dutchman were reported as late as 1911.
