Conzo credits his family for helping to shape his world view. His grandmother Dr. Evelina López Antonetty was an education and housing activist, and his father Joe Conzo Sr. was friend and biographer to musician Tito Puente. Conzo’s mother Lorraine Montenegro saved his negatives, ensuring the important history her son captured was preserved.
