Label TextThe gargoyle is one of the most well-recognized medieval fantasy creatures. This one is almost a direct copy of examples found on the rooftops of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. By the 19th century, most of the Cathedral’s gargoyles had deteriorated and money was raised for their renovation. The renovated gargoyles represent a 19th-century fanciful take on the medieval past, not unlike Howard Pyle's Arthurian tales and illustrations.
