Label TextThis drawing bears its caption and the story title “Excess Baggage” in the artist’s handwriting on the reverse. However, the publication has not been located. Perhaps it was not published; or, the publication has not been digitized for searching yet. The three friends are walking to catch a bus on a clear, windy day. Their hats, a cloche and berets, which were popular in the 1920s, as were their fashionably slim silhouettes, are possible clues to the illustration’s date. The rural background suggests that they are city-bound. A student of Howard Pyle, Eugenie M. Wireman illustrated a wide range of books and magazines during her career.
