Label TextHenry Cabot Lodge's text describes this first skirmish of the American Revolution, when British troops defeated American militiamen in Lexington, near Boston. Pyle's painting—one of twelve for Lodge's text—is less an illustration of Lodge's minimally descriptive words, and more an image of the heroism and pathos of wounded and dying Americans.
