Label TextThe 1960s Brandywine Region had one concept of contemporary art. It was dominated by the realistic landscapes of the strong patriarchal artistic lineage of the Wyeth family. It suffocated me! Only Margo offered a light to abstract landscapes. In 1968, this painting was named the best landscape painted by a Delaware artist. This prize was a pivotal artistic memory. If you follow your path, the world will catch up to you one day.
My father never wavered in his support of Margo’s artistic path. He wrote to me on his deathbed, “Believe in yourself.” This painting embodies that critical life philosophy.
Strong matriarchal artistic lineages do exist!
