Label TextExhibited as Woman in Doorway in early 1966, Black Doorway I is the first of three paintings Osborne executed that year that features a figure at the edge of a doorframe. The additions of found objects—window screening and a brass doorknob—both approximate architectural space and create physical barriers for the figure materializing from the background.
