Label TextFrank Short was a printmaker and teacher of printmaking who was primarily responsible for bringing back into fashion the mezzotint process in the late 19th century. The art of mezzotint, popular during the early 18th-century, had virtually disappeared with the introduction of newer, less labor-intensive printing processes. This image is part of a series of mezzotints Short made after J. M. W. Turner's famous publication the Liber Studiorum. The soft focus and tonalism that are key features of the mezzotint print are ideal in recreating Turner's evocative landscapes. (msf)
