Label TextHarold Brett was a painter as well as illustrator. He had already studied art in Boston and New York when he became one of Pyle's advanced students in 1906. Although there is no evidence that he spent time in Europe during World War I, he illustrated a number of scenes of soldiers in action, including this view of American infantrymen in a muddy and smoky trench firing a light machine gun at attacking aircraft.
