Label TextJames E. Newton joined the University of Delaware's Black American Studies department in 1972 where he taught and published extensively until his retirement in 2005. Prior to his settling in Delaware, Newton received his master of fine art's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate in art and education at Illinois State University. Newton's early work reveals the artist's commitment to abstraction and printmaking with the infusion of political narrative. The artist experimented with a range of print techniques including collagraphy, in which materials are applied to a rigid surface.
