Label TextThe found objects in Flack's screenprint evoke the flood of commemorative memorabilia that accompanied the Bicentennial and put the iconography of the American Revolution into a new consumerist context. In accompanying text, she writes: “The Fourth of July Still Life is a visual mix of symbols. I grew up on the streets of New York and all of the objects I represented in the work came out of my American childhood. I have chosen these objects because they evoke memories, feelings, sounds, and colors of America. The brash sound of a trumpet, the tinsel of a shiny fire cracker, the kitsch appeal of a dime store liberty bell. I have tried to create an absolutely American still life.” - AF
