Label TextSeptember 13, 1918, was the second day of the battle for the St. Mihiel salient, one of the first independent actions of U. S. troops under General Pershing's command in the First World War. A salient is a battlefield feature that projects into enemy territory. The salient is surrounded by the enemy on three sides, making the troops occupying the salient vulnerable.
