Label TextAn important figure of American abstraction, Anne Truitt is considered by many art historians and critics to be a pioneer of Minimalism. However, Truitt remained as focused on the subtleties of color, light, and content as she did on the formal concerns associated with the 1960s movement. The artist’s first solo exhibition, Truitt, was held at the André Emmerich Gallery in New York in February 1963 and included Thirtieth. Truitt had just begun making her signature wooden structures, the first of which she completed in 1961. In these columnar forms she combined painting and sculpture, creating color in three dimensions.
