Label TextIn Baskin's portrait of Diego Velasquez (1599–1660), the Spanish artist emerges from a sea of black ink. Court painter to the Spanish royal family, Velasquez was influential as a portraitist, and his paintings often place his sitters against dark backgrounds. Baskin's image may be based on the painter's self-portrait in Museo de Bellas Artes in Valencia.
