Label TextThree young women lean against a fence and gaze expectantly up the train tracks. Perhaps they are waiting for a train to arrive from Taos on the Denver, Rio Grande and Western Railroad—the “D and R” of the title. However, their gazes lead not to a train but to a trio of men in dark suits and sombreros gathered beneath the light post, implying that the depot may also be a site for socializing among local youth. Sloan’s vision of youth in Santa Fe aligns with his depictions of young women walking and talking in the parks and on the rooftops of New York.
