Label TextBorn in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Henry McCarter he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1879 to 1885 with Thomas Eakins, and in Paris, where he served an apprenticeship in lithography with poster artist Henri deToulouse-Lautrec. This poster promoting Good Housekeeping magazine recalls the strong black outlines, clear cut shapes, and limited palette of many of Toulouse-Lautrec's works.
Painter and illustrator Henry McCarter became the first instructor of illustration at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1900.
