The quotation refers to the poor newsboy Michael, who grows up to be a model of manly virtue. Gayle Hoskins depicts him rescuing the woman he secretly loves after she faints when abandoned by her faithless fiancé at the candlelit altar. The illustration hints at all the elements of one reviewer's summary of the book as "a thrilling romance, full of adventure and spicy with the sweetest elements of young love and noble ambition, brought to happy fruition.”
