Label TextWhile the publishing industry suffered setbacks during the Depression, the inexpensive fiction magazines called pulps prospered. An inscription on the reverse of this drawing indicated that it was a cover study for Western Story Magazine in 1936. The publication advertised "Big Clean Stories of Outdoor Life," distinguishing itself from more lurid western pulps. In the 1930s, the magazine cost 10 cents; its last issue appeared in 1949. As the 1930s ended, and for the rest of his career, Hoskins returned to historical subjects and portraits.
