Label TextSloan appears to be presenting his friend Ed Davis as a comic figure with oversized shoes, an exaggerated cane, and face paint. This may be a costume study for a play; Davis, Sloan, and other current and former students of the Pennsylvania Academy produced in a series of comic plays in the mid-1890s, including "Twillbe" and "The Widow Cloonan's Curse," on a make-shift stage in Sloan's studio.
