Jean CharlotFrench painter and printmaker, 1898–1979, active in Mexico and the United States
Charlot painted murals, produced prints, and taught primarily in Mexico, New York, and Hawaii. Born in France, Charlot studied art in Paris and served in the French military. In 1921, he and his mother moved to Mexico. He became involved in the mural movement, working alongside Fernando Leal and Diego Rivera. He helped to preserve and champion the work of the popular Mexican printmaker, Jose Guadalupe Posada. In the 1930s he executed murals in New York for the WPA. In 1949, he moved to Hawaii to become a professor of art at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and he remained there until his death.
