Albert Winslow BarkerAmerican painter and printmaker, 1874–1947

Born in Chicago, Barker studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1890 through 1895. Partially color blind, Barker liked to work in charcoal as a student. He tried his hand at etching but eventually discovered that lithography was more suited to his drawing style. Barker served as the Director of Art Education for the Wilmington Public Schools from 1921 through 1929. His favorite subjects were found in rural Pennsylvania and he purchased a farm in Rose Valley. Barker became an instructor at the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia and earned a Ph.D. in archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania.
