David Chamberlain was born in Canton, Ohio in 1949, and received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1971 and his master of fine arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. Chamberlain's abstract paintings and sculptures are inspired by his interest in musical patterns and relationships. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, and the deCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA.
Chamberlain was the first American artist officially invited to teach at the Fine Arts University of Hanoi, where he also completed a residency in 1995. He is a recipient of grants and awards from the South Carolina Arts Commission, the Aspen Institute, and the Krasner-Pollock Foundation.
