Jozef G. BakosAmerican painter, printmaker, 1891–1977

Jozef Bakos was a member of "Los Cinco Pintores" a group of modern artists active in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the 1920s. He was born and trained in Buffalo, New York. He taught at universities and at Santa Fe High School and was a skilled carpenter. Carpentry commissions--including a major one from La Fonda Hotel-- supported him financially, as his modern, colorful compositions did not sell well. Bakos and his wife Teresa were at the center of the Santa Fe art community that also included John Sloan and Will Shuster.
