Robert NealAmerican painter and muralist, 1916–1987

An Atlanta native, Robert Neal (1916–1987) studied with Hale Woodruff and became his assistant at Spelman College. He assisted with the Talladega College Amistad murals in 1939, producing the cartoon drawings and modeling for some figures. Neal exhibited in groundbreaking exhibitions of African American art at the Baltimore Museum of Art and at Tanner Art Galleries in Chicago. In the 1940s, Neal moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he continued to paint and to teach art.
